On Wednesday 12 March, Tuxford Academy was delighted to welcome Tom Dickenson from Tom’s Talks.
Talking to all of Year 10 and 12, Tom shared his own personal story and journey with his mental health, and while the topic was very sensitive, he had the full attention of both audiences who engaged and responded with maturity and respect. Following his story, Tom shared advice on the various ways we can look after and improve our mental health and wellbeing, and also how we can look after others who are struggling. The topic of social media was also raised, and Tom discussed the negative impacts that it can have on our lives if not managed properly.
Following the main talks, Tom offered smaller workshops to students to work with them on their goals and a positive and effective growth mindset.
Students and staff alike couldn’t speak more highly of the talk, finding it insightful and a great opportunity to break down the barriers around talking about mental health – with some students even sharing some of their own experiences. The students are still talking about the discussion with Tom and the positive impact that it has left on them. Assistant Principal Mr Longmore said that ‘Tom was the best external speaker we have ever had in the academy.’
We would like to extend a huge thank you to Jane and Mark Beardsley who very kindly funded this project through the charitable work of Paul’s Pitstop, founded in memory of their son, Paul Beardsley. Tom’s Talks have had a lasting impact and have encouraged our students to think about and discuss their own mental health and wellbeing.
